14Kgold on Jezebel in the days of yore, and some others; you can call me 14K. Back in my ancestral stomping grounds of NYC, teaching, editing, feeding a music addiction. I love learning; if you can teach me something, I'm all ears. I'd love to teach you what I can in return. Nota bene: I can accept an initial lack of knowledge, but I'm too old to tolerate bullshit. If you prefer willful ignorance, this ain't the place for you.

The Met Opera Announces its 2012-13 Season! →

Only a couple of things I’m super-excited about, but that’s in part because I’ve already seen a bunch of the repertoire, and, because it’s the 200th birthdays of both Verdi and Wagner, there’s not much room for the 20th-century stuff I prioritize.

Some of the less-commonly revived stuff coming back this year is great; the Met premieres are quite exciting; and a number of the new productions look promising. Casting is all over the place this year—but that will be true for everyone, again because of the Verdi/Wagner anniversaries.

Online brochure!

I’ll definitely be seeing:
  • Un Ballo in Maschera
  • Dialogues des Carmelites
  • Le Comte Ory (I meant to go a couple years ago, but got sick)
  • Francesca da Rimini
  • The Tempest
I may also go to:
  • Giulio Cesare
  • Maria Stuarda (pro: rarely done; con: bel canto, which is not my thing)
  • Le Nozze di Figaro (I want to see this, but the cast isn’t particularly exciting)
I also want to see Das Rheingold, but I don’t think they’re doing any performances outside of the complete Ring cycle. A shame—Eric Owens is an astounding Alberich, he was only onstage for five minutes in Goetterdaemmerung and absolutely blew the rest of the cast away.
There are also at least eight other productions I’d be all over if I hadn’t seen them already. Fully annotated suggestions for anyone who wants ‘em ;)
